The New York Ten

Ten unmissable experiences

New York rewards ambition, but your visit needs more than tall buildings and famous addresses. These ten experiences put the harbour, art, public space, theatre and the immigrant city into the same picture.

Statue of Liberty seen from a Circle Line tour boat in April 2011.
01 · THE NEW YORK TEN

Liberty Island & Ellis Island

America’s promise, and the people who tested it.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
Take the ferry for the statue. Give Ellis Island equal time.

Seeing Liberty from the water restores something that photographs flatten: the statue stands at the entrance to a working harbour. Manhattan slips behind the boat, the wind catches your jacket, and the idea of arriving in America becomes unusually tangible. On Liberty Island, walk the grounds before deciding how much you need to climb. The museum and the changing views across the harbour make a rewarding visit without a crown ticket.

Ellis Island gives that monumental promise individual lives. Its immigration museum asks you to consider the journeys, inspections and decisions behind the word “arrival”. Let the building’s rooms and personal accounts slow you down. This is where the outing becomes more than an encounter with a national symbol.

Reserve an early departure if you want both islands. Security and boat queues take time, and a late start can turn Ellis into a hurried afterthought. The free Staten Island Ferry is a useful harbour journey, but it does not land at either island; choose it for a view, rather than imagining it supplies the same experience.

Central Park: leave the avenue behind

A landscape made for metropolitan life.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
Walk far enough for the skyline to disappear, then find it again.

Enter through the busy southern edge and you might mistake Central Park for a collection of photo locations. Keep moving. The Mall opens into a formal avenue of trees; Bethesda Terrace brings water, carved stone and public theatre together; paths around the Lake loosen the city’s geometry. Beyond them, the Ramble offers a deliberately more tangled landscape.

Choose a manageable section and explore it properly. A walk from the southern entrances through Bethesda to the mid-park landscapes gives a first visit shape without demanding that you cover the whole park. Stop where people are actually using it: a ball game, a bench with a view, a lawn on a bright afternoon. New York’s appetite for public space is as interesting as the scenery.

This landscape was designed and built, and its creation also displaced communities, including Seneca Village. The Conservancy’s interpretation helps put that history beside the pleasure of the present park. If you are heading to the Met, finish on the east side. Otherwise, allow the paths to decide your exit; the avenues will still be there when you return.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Find a thread through a world of objects.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
Your best Met visit will have a point of view.

A museum of this scale can turn curiosity into administration: rooms covered, masterpieces located, photographs taken. Give your visit a more personal centre. Choose Egyptian objects, European painting, Islamic art, American rooms or another interest, then let a small number of works hold you. The pleasure lies in changing scale, from an entire architectural setting to something made to fit a human hand.

The building makes those changes particularly vivid. A reconstructed room can evoke the habits of its inhabitants; a sculpture changes as you move around it; neighbouring objects can complicate a story you thought you knew. Read enough to understand what you are looking at, including how it entered the collection. You need neither an art-history qualification nor a route through every department.

Make space for one unexpected gallery beyond your chosen theme. That small detour often becomes the visit’s most memorable discovery. Check opening days before arranging Central Park around it: the Fifth Avenue museum closes on Wednesdays. For most overseas visitors, admission is a set price, rather than the pay-what-you-wish arrangement available to eligible local residents and students.

Brooklyn Bridge with Lower Manhattan beyond, seen across waterfront.
04 · THE NEW YORK TEN

Cross Brooklyn Bridge & linger on the waterfront

Walk into the view.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
The crossing deserves an afternoon on the other side.

Begin in Manhattan and take the pedestrian route over Brooklyn Bridge. As the towers and cables frame successive views, the city becomes an arrangement of water, infrastructure and ambition. Pause without blocking the path; this is still a crossing used by other people, and the most satisfying views are not confined to the central photo stop.

On the Brooklyn side, continue into DUMBO and towards the river. The former industrial streets explain the bridge’s setting more effectively than a single picture of the Manhattan Bridge between buildings. Brooklyn Bridge Park gives the skyline a foreground: lawns, piers, places to sit, families and evening walkers. Follow the waterfront far enough to find a spot where you want to stay.

Add Brooklyn Heights if time and energy permit. Its residential streets and elevated promenade offer a different perspective on the same harbour. You can return by subway or a separately ticketed ferry instead of retracing the bridge. The combined experience earns its place through those changes of viewpoint: crossing the river, walking a neighbourhood, and finally seeing Manhattan from outside itself.

Night-time Times Square with illuminated screens and street crowd.
05 · THE NEW YORK TEN

Broadway, with Times Square as the overture

Let the bright lights lead somewhere.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
A theatre seat turns the district’s spectacle into an evening worth remembering.

Times Square is an extraordinary burst of commercial light, but standing under the screens can exhaust its possibilities quite quickly. Come before a performance, take in the scale and noise, then step into a theatre. The contrast is part of the evening: a public arena designed to seize attention gives way to a room where everyone concentrates on the same stage.

Choose the production rather than the most famous title you recognise. A play, a new musical or a long-running favourite can each provide the right night. Read the running time, content guidance and seat description; a restricted-view bargain can be poor value if the staging disappears behind a pillar. Make dinner reservations with enough slack to reach the theatre comfortably.

Use Broadway’s official listings to reach authorised sellers. TKTS can make a flexible evening more affordable, but available performances change and you should not build the trip around a promised discount for one show. Afterwards, walk a block or two away from the densest crowd before deciding where to eat or drink. New York has given you plenty of spectacle; now let the performance be the thing you talk about.

CRUCIAL TIP: Check the seat map and sightline warning, not just the price. A less fashionable show seen well can be a much better night.

Downtown Manhattan: Wall Street, 9/11 & the city’s beginnings

Read the commercial city alongside its losses.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
Come with time to absorb what you see.

Begin where Manhattan’s monumental skyline gives way to older street patterns. Around Wall Street, the buildings and narrow approaches make finance feel like an urban district rather than an abstract force. Continue through the lower city towards the harbour, noticing how institutions, immigration and trade occupy the same small area. This is a walk through beginnings as well as present-day power.

The 9/11 Memorial changes the register. Give the names, water and absence time without treating the pools as a hurried photograph stop between financial landmarks. The museum is a separate, ticketed and emotionally demanding visit; choose it deliberately, rather than assuming every member of your party wants an intensive interior encounter.

Walk towards Battery Park afterwards and let daylight, harbour air and ordinary city movement conclude the route. Downtown makes the Ten because New York’s global image becomes more comprehensible when its commercial beginnings and recent losses are held together. It is not necessary to enter every institution. One considered museum visit, an attentive street circuit and a pause beside the water make a stronger experience than a succession of rushed interiors.

GETTING THEREWorld Trade Center / Fulton Street

Empire State Building and Midtown skyline at sunset seen from Top of the Rock.
07 · THE NEW YORK TEN

See the skyline from Top of the Rock

A little distance from all that height.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
Choose one observation deck. This one lets the Empire State Building join the view.

At street level, Manhattan’s towers can feel like separate assertions of height. From Rockefeller Center they become a composition. Look south towards the Empire State Building and the dense island beyond it; turn north to understand Central Park’s scale within the grid. The waterways and distant boroughs make the city feel larger than the neighbourhood you have been walking.

Top of the Rock is our first-visit choice because its views include one of the skyline’s defining buildings. That is an editorial preference, rather than a claim that every visitor needs the same deck. The Empire State Building offers its own architectural history; other observatories foreground glass, theatre or extreme height. Spending on several rarely improves a short holiday as much as spending that time elsewhere.

Aim for a clear forecast and arrive before sunset if the transition to illuminated city matters to you. Allow for security and the journey upstairs when choosing the slot. At ground level, explore Rockefeller Center’s plazas and art: the deck is part of an urban ensemble. Additional rooftop rides are optional paid products; the skyline remains the reason to come.

Leafy Greenwich Village residential street with brownstones and fire escapes, July 2023.
08 · THE NEW YORK TEN

Greenwich Village & the West Village

Follow the streets when the grid gives way.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
Spend an afternoon at pavement level.

Around Washington Square, New York becomes a city of people occupying small spaces: chess tables, benches, cafés, music and conversations that do not need an attraction ticket. Begin here, then walk west into streets where the familiar Manhattan grid loses its authority. Short blocks, angled junctions and older buildings make exploring feel more intimate.

The Village’s associations with artists, political organising, queer life and music deserve curiosity, but a walk should not become an inventory of former residents. Notice how the neighbourhood works now. Take a side street because its houses interest you; look into a bookshop; stop for coffee before continuing towards Hudson River Park. A little historical reading or a good walking tour can give the streets depth without turning them into a museum.

An evening music booking is a worthwhile addition if it suits your interests. Check the venue’s age rules, minimum spend and performance arrangements, since an appealing ticket price may not be the whole bill. Keep daytime exploration separate from that commitment. This part of the city makes the Ten because a first visit needs a place where walking and sitting, rather than ascending and entering, are enough.

BEST TIMEAfternoon; evening for a booked performance

09 · THE NEW YORK TEN

Eat the immigrant city: Lower East Side & Chinatown

A neighbourhood meal with more than one course.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
Follow the food, then ask who brought it here.

Begin on the Lower East Side, where food and migration make a particularly legible partnership. Jewish delis and bakeries, Chinese restaurants, newer arrivals and changing storefronts sit within a district whose identity has never stayed still. A bagel, a bowl of noodles or a shared plate can be an introduction, but the interest comes from placing it within the streets around you.

Consider booking a Tenement Museum tour before your wander. Its apartment visits require a guided reservation and focus on particular families and periods, so choose a story that interests you. That encounter gives the neighbourhood’s everyday buildings a weight they can otherwise lack. Continue towards Chinatown and eat somewhere that fits your appetite, rather than treating a celebrated queue as the only possible lunch.

Do not try to reduce New York’s food to one district or a competition between cuisines. Use this afternoon to develop a habit for the whole trip: notice who is cooking, learn what to order and leave room for a second small stop. Queens, Harlem and Brooklyn can take that exploration much further. The Ten offers a strong beginning to a city whose variety is best understood at the table.

Grand Central Terminal interior, New York City, New York, USA.
10 · THE NEW YORK TEN

Grand Central, Fifth Avenue & Midtown’s architectural icons

A working station and a city looking upwards.

THE CRUCIAL VERDICT
Enter the terminal before hurrying to another skyline.

Grand Central is one of the rare famous interiors that remains inseparable from everyday movement. Commuters cross the concourse while visitors look towards the celestial ceiling and the clock below. Stand to one side and let both purposes coexist. The station matters because New York’s scale is expressed here through a public room, not just another tall building.

An official guided tour can help you read the architecture and less obvious details, but a self-directed visit to the public spaces is rewarding too. Individual dining and shopping hours differ from terminal access. Keep circulation clear, especially at commuting times, and avoid assuming that every interesting doorway is open to visitors.

Continue into Midtown with a selective walk towards Fifth Avenue. The Chrysler Building’s exterior, the avenue’s changing institutions and Rockefeller Center reveal competing ideas about how a global city presents itself. Choose one or two interiors only where public access permits; this is not a promise of access to office towers. Grand Central and the surrounding streets give a first visit an essential architectural vocabulary, while the separate skyline experience shows the resulting city from above.

Make it happen

New York at a glance

When to go

Spring and autumn favour long walks. Summer is humid and busy but brings outdoor life; winter can be bitterly cold, with theatre and museums particularly welcome. Holiday crowds and accommodation prices change the equation.

How long?

Two days offer a strong impression; three allow a harbour or museum half-day. Four is workable with choices. Five full days is our sweet spot; six or more make room for Queens, Harlem and a less hurried Brooklyn.

Getting around

Walk within neighbourhood clusters and use the subway between them. OMNY accepts contactless payment: use the same card or device for fare capping. Check weekend service changes. NYC Ferry is a separate system; taxis suit some late or awkward journeys.

How to plan the Ten

Pair Downtown with a deliberate memorial visit and the harbour. Give the Met and Central Park breathing room; join Grand Central to a short Fifth Avenue route. Keep Broadway tied to the performance you book, then choose Brooklyn, the villages and immigrant food neighbourhoods in separate sessions.

Where to stay

Midtown is practical for a first visit and theatre. Chelsea and the Village suit walkers and evenings out. Lower Manhattan is useful for the harbour, with quieter late hours. Downtown Brooklyn can work well if your hotel is near a subway line serving your plans.

Have another day?

Harlem: an important additional encounter with Black New York, its cultural institutions, music and neighbourhood history; allow a purposeful visit beyond a hurried detour. The High Line and Chelsea: a strong extra walk through adaptive reuse, galleries and the changing Hudson edge. MoMA: the strongest art alternative, particularly for modern-art visitors; the Met takes the broad first-visit slot. Empire State Building: an excellent substitute for Top of the Rock, rather than another required deck. Queens food neighbourhoods: exceptional depth; expand the food exploration with a dedicated journey. American Museum of Natural History: a leading family alternative to the Met. A baseball game: a superb seasonal immersion when the fixture calendar and your interests align. Staten Island Ferry: a free harbour view, without landing at Liberty or Ellis islands.

Best day trips

The Hudson Valley offers landscapes and smaller towns once the city has had enough time. Washington and Boston deserve their own visits rather than a rushed excursion.

Book the islands and the performance that matter to you. Keep at least one afternoon open for a neighbourhood that catches your interest. The purpose of the Crucial Ten isn't to make your holiday busier. It's to make choosing easier.
